Besides the circulation base metals twoonie... there are collector issue twoonies with gold plated cores and silver rings, with gold cores and silver rings and the anniversary twoonnie with a gold ring and silver(but .400 gold) core.

I have not seen a solid colour gold or silver twoonie anywhere but here. Someone posted an all silver one here once as well. I don't see a solid coloured one in Charlton either(gold or silver).

I don't feel like uploading pix or searching for the outcome of the silver one, cuz that won't help you anyway. So, you either have an error(struck on wrong planchette), or a post mint "doctored" coin... plated or such. It's kinda hard to tell from your picture.

Check to see what parts are magnetic or not, and compare to a regular twoonie. Get a good magnifier and look along the edges for signs of being plated. Could you scan the coin for a better pix?

Not for the inexperienced but... you could scratch the edge of a reed to look for a colour change.

>>>edit... oh, and there were counterfeit twoonies being made in Quebec at one time. Perhaps their manufacture technique leads to getting worn and becoming like yours?

Every so often they show up on ebay, as part of a p-l set. I am not sure what happened, but they are sealed in the plastic from the mint. An alloy error- mixing error? I don't know.

Well, so far, the coin is either...

1) from a pl set, as per coinsnpaper.(Proof like set; sealed in cellophane directly from the Royal Canadian Mint). I don't see such in my Charlton Cataloge but my catalogue is like 5 years old(I have no real interest in newer coins).

B) a counterfeit. There were/are apparently common enough. More than one "outfit" has made the news duplicating twoonies, so there are probably several types/compositions of counterfeits circulating.

Thirdly) a plated, "home-made" piece.

or Finally) a truly rare piece that was accidentally struck on a wrong planchette or blank. What you would need to do would be to get the coin third party graded( TPG) to guarantee it's authenticity. In Canada these companies would be I.C.C.S. or C.C.C.S. This would be an expensive proposition for a fake; but well worth it for an authentic piece.

We would need excellent photos to get a good close up look... and accurate dimensions and weight. Even then, without being able to physically examine the item in question, all that proof may turn out to be still inconclusive... hence the existence of TPGs.

>>>edit... spelling!
