I have tried and tried...and just can NOT make out a difference in these two coins. Yet when I look at them on pictures, the crown seems to be different. Can anyone please explain in detail WHAT to look for...? thank you HHB

I had an image (can't find it now) which showed a host of markers of the small crown. The best one that I saw was the line above the date. On the normal large crown, the line stops above the 0 in 1906. On the small crown, the line extends further to almost above the 6. There are others as well, and perhaps someone here can post a copy of the image I'm referring to.

Hi hhbkiddo, the small crown variety is very rare. Here are where there are differences that I know of. On the lg. crown variety, the maple leaf was redesigned for more detail, and the crown was enlarged to fill the space between the maple boughs. I believe that the large crown has much more detail to it than the small version. You might want to consider ordering or downloading the Charest guide. it has really good images of some lesser known varieties of canadian coins. I can't seem to find the proper link to it, but I will keep looking and post it for you if I can find it.

here is the link. I believe the instant downloadable guide in PDF format is only $20 and it loads quick and works well. can at least help you out some of the time anyway. http://charest.qc.ca/book/

Tough coin to determine whether it's the LARGE or small Crown. I say this because most are found to be in very poor state and when there is soo much wear in the Crown, it makes it that much more difficult to determine the Variety! I've purchased a few heavily worn '06 quarter's in hopes of obtaining the all illusive "small" Crown, but when received back from I.C.C.S., it's the same old story! (LARGE Crown) Glenn

The arrows in the illustration provided by malissadawn point to the differences in the velvet inside the crown. The small crown is rounded while the large crown has two distinct dimples, this along with the length of the line above the date(as pointed out by skelly423)make it possible to identify the small crown even in fairly well-worn examples.
