I have owned this coin for twenty years but re-imaged it recently. I posted this one on another site, but thought I would post it here also for the '59 buffs. Canada 1859 cent in PCGS and ICCS MS-65 Red, PCGS pop 4/1. It is nearly 100% red, which is a miracle after 165 years. A soft strike and a few marks, but still one of the very best around.

Haxby's website describes a progressively collapsing obverse die for this one, with which I agree, and which likely caused the soft strike in the center of the obverse. This coin shows a slightly more advanced obverse die state then those described by Haxby.

1859 is a common date. PCGS has graded 428 Canada cents dated 1859, but graded only 17 of them as red, most of those at MS-64 and below. I am not sure how many ICCS has graded in 65 or higher, but in their 2013 pop report it was only 20 and I suspect most of those are not fully red.

That is a beautiful 1859!

I've seen quite a few 1859's that show striking weakness due to die collapse. I think that needs to be taken into account when grading the higher circulated grades. What might appear VF at first glance could be EF or in some extreme collapse cases AU.
