@jim, I'm def a lurker in this subforum, but can you please help me to understand what is going on here. I see that this is just the central portrait, but wasn't this banknote just cut up after it left the Bureau? That seems like damage to me, but again, I don't know much of anything about these things. Thx!

The portrait of Salmon P Chase is typically seen on the 1862 $1 Legal Tender. There's plenty of these notes available.

His portrait was also used on an 1862 $1,000 Interest Bearing Note which is non existent. A proof of the note sold at auction in 2005 for over $12K.

Below is the auction results for the OP's example. I've also included my BEP engraving of Chase's portrait used on the center vignette of the 1862 $1 LT.
