This 1999 P Jefferson nickel left me guessing especially on the obverse of the coin! The first thing I saw was the double mint mark and the doubling of the first 9 of the date. Then the Liberty looked like something rolled over the script and pushed on the bottom leaving a indent on the letters. And after I searched Variety Vista and Wexler's and found nothing on a doubled mint mark for that year, I believe it is a Die issue combined with Machine Doubling. I currently don't have any acetone to clean the large carbon spot on the obverse or the dirt on the reverse but It is an interesting coin so I hope someone looks at it and let's me know what happened or what they think, and as always regards.

The doubling you're seeing is Die Deterioration Doubling.

Thank you for replying. Looked like a Die issue to me!

Agree DDO, and that's quite the black carbon spot, maybe India ink.

That melted butter look is classic Die Deterioration Doubling.

The smooshed letters at the bottom of Liberty could be some model of Coin Wrapping Machine scraping across the bottom of the letters. I think you can see scrapes on We Trust as well.

That's a heck of a carbon spot.

allcoinsaregood,
In what year did RPMs stop? That would tell you if it is an RPM or not.
It looks like DDD as mentioned and a nice example.
I do not think that black spot is carbon.I don't think acetone removes carbon spots.
