Looks to me like the planchet was defective.

I have seen this multiple times over the years on different denominations. Just something on the coin. If you soak it in acetone, it will get rid of it or at least lessen it, some sort of possible "growth" of something.

Oh yeah, and

It's some kind of gunk/stain. Try soaking it in 100% pure acetone.

Yes, for fun, give the coin a looooong soak in 100% acetone. I had a clad coin with a similar appearance several years ago. Acetone reduced the 'stuff' dramatically.

Sometimes coins come in contact with sticky substances like candy or food, then fabric from carpet, clothes ect... sticks to it.

The reverse of the coin is obviously stained by something. Occam's Razor says therefore so is the obverse, just more distinctively.

I believe this is very typical of "cup holder coins" that had just a little bit of Coke or similar spilled on them, then the coin sits in the sticky acidic residue for a couple of months. The pattern you're seeing is just the pattern of the plastic surface of the cup holder.

Agreed, it is not a plated coin it is a clad coin.
I agree with a dried liquid of some kind.It stained the clad nickel layer.
