I was going through a bag of wheat pennies that I bought years ago. I noticed that there were quite a few steel 1943 pennies in there. So the first thing I do is start picking out the steel pennies when I noticed one of them was a 1957 Wheat penny. The first thing I think is someone at one point in time gave it a zinc plating. But I noticed that the obverse edges are very sharp on a half of the coin and that it struck really weird off center. I also noticed that the coating follows the weird strike edges perfectly in that the coin has copper colored rim. So I weigh the coin and it weighs 3.1 g. Mystery solved right? Well, it sticks to a magnet. This is weird

Does it just stick to the magnet or does it jump on to the magnet? Reason I ask is Nickel can become magnetized to some extent and such a plating could explain your situation. 43 steels weighed an average of 2.7 grams.
I swing a metal detector and have a knack for finding dirty old coins.

It's not a steel penny. It sticks to a magnet but it's weak. The only reason it interested me is because of the weird rim of the strike and the fact that the penny is thicker on one side than the other.

Better photos and a pic of the edge. I think it is a plated coin and maybe a former Encased Coin "bezel"

It appears like this cent was in a bezel then plated with zinc or possibly nickel (which is slightly magnetic)
