I recently picked up an 1869-S quarter eagle worn down to a Vf condition. The coin weighs 4.10 grams. A "new" quarter eagle should weigh right around 4.18 grams. Is the 4.10 gram weight right for the amount of wear? Or is it a fake? Is there a way to equate wear/grade with weight or were the planchet tolerances back then not uniform enough for such a correlation? See attached pics. Thanks in advance.
The tolerance on classic gold coins was pretty tight, I think around 0.016 g for a quarter eagle. But you definitely can lose some weight with wear, perhaps about 1-2%, depending on the amount of wear. Your coin is 1.9% below expected weight, so I think it's probably acceptable for the amount of wear shown.
If it's a fake it's a good one. Still some frost in the protected places but cleaned and maybe polished. It looks struck. Probably not worth sending to ANACS.

I have an 1867 quarter eagle with comparable wear. It weighs 4.10 grams and PCGS certified it as Genuine - XF detail. So, I'd expect your coin is genuine, unfortunately harshly cleaned and likely polished.
