1963 P- 25c DDO (Any guesses on the variety from the seller images before it arrives. Nope, not a contest, just practice.)
http://www.varietyvista.com/09b%20W...s%201963.htm

I picked this up last weekend at auction. I'm not a quarter guy but the doubling was easy to see from the sellers' images. There are a few DDO's few for the year, some of which are similar.

I just thought I'd post the sellers images to see if anyone wants to hone their skills.

For those just starting out, it can be helpful to determine the die state of the dies that struck this coin. (EDS- Early Die State, MDS- Mid Die State, LDS- Late Die State.) The die state can help you determine what stage the variety is in and the markers to look for on this coin. Late Die State coins will tend to have die cracks, Die chips, Die Deterioration, etc.
(This seller usually has decent images but shadows and dark areas can hide some markers.)
I'll give the variety # this weekend after it arrives, but I'm sure you guys will be all over it.

I'd like to make a suggestion to the more experienced members, so it helps those that may still be trying to understand or still learning; when you post your guess, add the marker that convinced you which variety it is.

Thanks, and enjoy the hunt.

(My apologies in advance to other members who may have increased competition in the future with this seller because of this post.)

With the Die crack, I'm going to say (edited out my answer) to let newer members find the answer.
Very nice looking coin!
Sorry about that. I just noticed your were trying to help with others learning.

I'm not familiar with quarter Doubled Die's. I'll wait out on this one, and let others guess.

Seeing Doubled Die evidence on the date was my main focus. Larger pics of Motto would help. Pretty sure I've got the match.

That's a nice DDO-001 FS-101!

I've owned a few of these. Date doubling is unique on this variety and the doubling on IGWT is pretty nice.

A key marker I always look for on this variety is on the B of LIBERTY. There is a pretty bold "blob" to the left of the top loop of the B that is present on every example I've had.

Nice pick!

Doubling on the date is easily seen so at quick glance I went to DDO-004 but as you mentioned die state and only Stage A was listed, I threw that out right away. I believe its Stage C although I can't see 1 of the markers.

Thank you all for the great replies. Thanks for "playing" along.
These are exactly the type of responses I was hoping for, to help newer collectors see what we see when "picking". It may increase our competition, but we were all there at one point. Different things seem to stick at different points in our learning.

Some of the doubling & markers are masked or "hidden" by shadows. Thats part of the game we play when picking. The sellers images can make all the difference though.

BTW- Greasy Fingers, Nothing to see with this seller. Everyone just ignore this seller.

AS a newer collector of error coins, I'd like to know if there is a reference site as to the value of errors/varieties. A while back I passed up 3 Buffalo nickels (2 D/D and 1 D/S) all in mint state because I didn't have any way to gage the value. The 3 ended up selling for $46.

One of my favorite doubled dies of Quarter series. Have a few of them, I'll post a close up below for you.

Marker: a die chip above the R of LIBERTY can be seen on stages of D and E but a die gouge in between the legs of the R just below the vertical bar has remained on all stages.

I have also wondered about Bubba Sully's coins in-hand. His pictures are professional grade and make the coins look wonderful.
