The 1809 Half Cent has a variety that says the coin has an O inside the 0. I assume that means there is a faint inner circle to the 0 of the date 1809. Is this correct? I haven't been able to find anything about this variety on the web. I haven't been able to see a picture of this type either.

I need help!

Help me, oh wise and wonderful Forum!

If you know about this variety, particularly if you have pictures, please help!

This coin supposedly is an 1809 Half Cent with the O inside the 0. I don't see it...

Here are two other examples of an 1809 Half Cent I have. Obviously the 9 is different from my previous post. This may be the 9 over inverted 9 (9 over 6) variant. Yes? Anyone? Bueller?

Hi Moe,
So, I presume you are an early copper fan. Thanks for all the photos of your cool coins!

Here is an image of a "circle inside 0" coin graded PCGS VF-30. It sold on Heritage in 2008 for $747.50 which is well above even Red Book value. I guess these aren't very common. You can see the "circle" but it's not extremely obvious. The example you show does appear to be the same type based on the shape of the date numerals but it is corroded, perhaps to the point that the circle has become invisible. If you can't see the circle, it's not worth paying a premium for the coin. I wouldn't buy a corroded Half Cent or large cent unless it was an outstanding bargain, but that's just my prejudice showing.

Thanks Jaobler! That does answer my question.

Essentially the O inside the 0 was a type of re-strike with an additional ring/knurl of metal inside the 0. (A lot like other copper re-strikes 1844 over 81, 1851/81, 1847 over small 7, etc.) My 1809 Half Cent appears to have the same shape 0 as your example (versus the other two which are much more round and filled in). Under a big blowup of the date there is a partial ring inside the right side of the 0, but not full length like in your example. The corrosion is most likely the culprit.

Oh, well. I bought it for $28 and for now it fills the hole in my book!

Thanks again Jaobler! You are a genius!

The 1809 0/smaller 0 is C-4 an R-2 or common variety. The 0/0 is usually visible but there is a much easier way to identify the variety, especially on lower grade coins. Look on the reverse at the point of the highest leaf of the wreath. None of the other five varieties have the leaf point more than midway between the S and the O. On C-4 it almost reaches the O See picture of rev of C-4
