The 1855 Large Cent had three major types, the upright 5 in the date, the slanting 5 and the slanting 5 with a knob of metal on the ear of the head (strange but true...). (I know the reverses are all the same, but we all like to see both sides of any coin!)

Here are the examples:

I can't speak for anyone else, but I enjoy looking at old copper. Nice to have a chance to look at different varieties in one post.

Very nice collection. What is that on top of the ear on the second coin?

Manilagalleontrade, if you mean the 5th picture from the top, (the one with the gob of metal on the ear of the Obverse head), that is a listed type of the 1855 large cent (my book calls it the 1855 Large Cent slanting 5s with knob on ear). Apparently they had a chunk either get knocked off the die or it was damaged some other way. And I guess it was good enough with the mint to continue minting coins like this. A bit looser standards than we have now. That's what makes collecting these coins so cool. That's the way it was done in our past.

he 55 knob on ear is a popular variety that is often collected by die stage. There are over 16 different die stages ranging from a perfect dies to one with cracks above the ear, to small chipping, larger chipping, a full blown "knob", to the final stages where the "knob" is much larger than what is shown above. The knob on ear is actually a common variety, but it is hard to find and brings a good premium because there are so many people chasing the die stages.
