I am a bit puzzled by this coin. I bought it because it seemed to have some low doubling on the obverse lettering that could indicate DDO FS-101. It also hinted at the doubling on the edge of the nose. I am generally willing to roll the dice on ebay for that particular DDO, as it would be a prize addition to my collection, and nice examples of ordinary 1942 cupronickel Jefferson nickels are easy to resell.

Under magnification, the doubling was very light dependent, and I began to think it was more a result of die polishing. That's when I noticed the strange notch structure inside the ponytail. I believe that corresponds to the boxy structures atop Monticello on the reverse, clashed in the usual way. However, I see no other clash remnants in the typical places. That includes the reverse where the clash would originate, although it is certainly possible that they swapped dies. The reverse does have a ton of die scratches going in the same top-bottom direction.

Is this what it looks like when a die clash is polished out of a WWII-era working die?

I can't help with your initial question but that "IN" looks like an earlier die state of this.

I was hoping for a closeup of the area to see the "strange notch structure inside the ponytail.".
Isn't that part of the clash in the field just above the ponytail?
There is a horizontal line there and also a horizontal line going from the back of his head to the base of the T (LIBERTY) which may just be a scratch.

Yes, looks like a polished die to remove a clashing event that missed the area between the ponytail and collar.

I see it. The mint worker missed that part of the Die Clash, while polishing the die.

Pete, I tried to get images of the notch with a magnifier, but the feature didn't cooperate. The axial light seems to bring it out the best. I had noticed that stubby little line from the ponytail, but I hadn't noticed the long one from the head towards the T. Those are approximately the right places for the roof and foundation of Monticello, respectively.

I have seen that ridge on Jefferson's nose on many nickels, both online and in hand. I had assumed it was due to polishing, but I read somewhere (possibly here) that the Mint would retouch or firm up certain areas on the die before it went into production striking.
