Hi Coin Community,

Yesterday I inherited a box of coins and keepsakes that was found in the ceiling space of my deceased (in 2004) grandfather's garage. My grandfather was a Royal Australian Air Force Pilot who spent time in NYC and DC during World War II and he returned to the USA in the mid-1960s, which is when I assume he came across these 1964 JFK Half Dollars.

They are in a set, with the dates 1917, 1963 and 'Memorial Half Dollar' (written in gold), together with the letters P and D beneath the coins. Both coins appear to have a dark tint or dirty wear on the rims due to being kept in an outdoor garage ceiling space for up to 60 years and they seem completely untouched until I photographed them today. Surprisingly, they have quite a satin finish, compared to any of the other coins found in the same box.

There is also a code imprinted inside the lip of the hard plastic housing which I am finding very difficult to read because of the small size of the print.

Please see the attached images. Are these JFK Half Dollars considered in any way rare?

No, they are not. However, these two are 90% silver (this year being the only circulation Kennedy halves of that spec) and may be uncirculated. Clearer pics may help determine the state of the individual coins.

1917 and 1963 refer to JFK's birth and death years. The packaging is of no value.

Not rare, common circulation strike coins. Both however are 90% silver so have some intrinsic value.

Cool find nonetheless. There may be sentimental value, but nothing overly significant in numismatic terms.

As a piece of history and something from your own family, this is a cool find. However, when JFK was assassinated, they made so very many of these 1964 halves that even full luster coins are still melted in this date. People were hoarding these halves (a new design plus being JFK), and all sorts of private sets like this were put together by third parties and sold.

For fun you might want to check at varietyvista.com and see if you have a doubled die or an RPM. I have found quite a few of the doubled dies.

Maybe a "rare" find in Australia but with a combined mintage of almost 433.5 million they are not rare in the US. But you have about $23 in silver.

Yes, for you in Australia, they are not very common, but her in the US they are fairly common - but nothing you would find in circulation much anymore.
