Hopefully I didn't reduce the quality of the images too much to when I made them fit. If so, there are larger versions on the Numista post. So far I have received a limited response to my inquiry. https://en.numista.com/forum/topic151019.html

I was thinking it might be https://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces13419.html but it isn't exactly the same as the pictured coin, and if it is that coin, what variation might it be?

Thanks!

@spott, I agree that these pieces look like New Jersey coppers and so I'm moving your thread to a different subforum. I'm hopeful that we can get some EAC folk to weigh in and if it is found that these are not what we were thinking, then I'll be sure to move the thread appropriately.

More pictures! Thanks Brandmeister, that will help. I can try matching side by side.

I'm just thrilled that you think it's a possibility. I thought maybe I was trying too hard to find treasure with something I got for 10 cents from a bargain bin!

Let's be clear, I am a beginner with early American stuff. I was just trying to find a horse and plow that matched the profile on your coin, and an EPU plus shield that lined up approximately the same way.

I should add, at least to my eyes, that looks like 1786. The last digit is much in question, and of course it's not very insightful since the first three digits would obviously be 178 in all cases. Maybe the position of the digits would be useful in identifying the specific variant. (As I am looking at plate coins, the 6 seems like an increasingly bad assumption.)

This seems to be a very good resource for NJ coppers, hosted by Notre Dame:

Lower left quadrant, 38 and 39 have a similar shape to the plow handles and horse neck/mouth/head.

Pretty sure it's a 1787 39-a. I can check my references after work.

39-a does have that slightly off-center shield. Should that be the case, pulling this copper out of a coin shop junk bin for 10¢ was a home run. Some nice pictures:

I straightened your original image to line up the two stars on the bottom (which I think is approximately what defines level in the plate photos):

Bleh, and I see I didn't get it completely level anyway.

Thanks everybody! I've been reading all the information and it makes the coin even better! Museum quality coins are fine for museums but I like coins that participated in the history.

Sorry, I meant to get back to this sooner but things got in the way. I just can't say with confidence exactly what variety it is, I'm sure a dedicated NJ guy could tell at a glance, but I'm more into Connecticuts.
