I'm assuming this would grade as a less desirable coin with details. Just wanted to get a verification as Buffalo nickels with black in the recesses and the background like on this coin are common. Would like to know what causes this. I like the way it looks though because it shows off the design better than just a plain Nickel colored coin. Should I avoid this type of coloration on Buffalos?

Typically, that accumulation is crud acquired over may years of circulation. Crud builds up, yet continued circulation removes/reduces the crud on the coin's raised features. Sunken areas retain the crud. It's not uncommon. I've seen a few thousand Buffalo nickels with a similar look over many decades of coin searching.

VanNomadCoins,

Doesn't that coloring sometimes indicate a cleaning?

Not likely in this scenario. With this coin's circulation wear I think ijn has got it.
I swing a metal detector and have a knack for finding dirty old coins.

Thanks for all the information. I didn't get a response on whether it would grade details because of this. I like the way it looks, but wondered if the coin is less desirable and if it lowers it's value. Thanks
