I didn't realize that Heritage would allow a seller to list a variety in their item description without it being listed on the slab. Is that a common practice? It is virtually impossible to see the Spiked '1' when zooming in on these NGC photos of an 1856 50C, 58, WB-103, Spiked '1' that sold for over $600.00 nine years ago:

I see a spike coming out the back of the "1" when I zoom in. Pretty clear on my end. BUT... I am not familiar with these coins at all, and am not sure if that is where the "spiked 1" location is supposed to be or not.
I'm not sure on the other part of your question.

Or maybe you were referring to NGC pictures in general on their website for comparison as far as the variety?
If so, you can try

NGC's photos of coins I've noticed are terrible when looking up slabs on their website.

I agree with you but I think it may have something to do with it being attributed to the Eric P. Newman collection.

Not just "any sellers" description is all I can come up with.
