I am looking for opinions on heavily environmentally damaged 1797 large cent. It looks to me to be an XF or AU example beneath all of this corrosion. I really can't say. Let me know your thoughts as well as how much value is lost due to this corrosion. If any value remains at all.

Definitely has value. Looks like it really might benefit from some expert conservation.

That corrosion is terminal, can almost guarantee any attempt to remove would leave pitting. If it was my coin I'd give it a round of VC to neutralize any active corrosion (doubt you would see much improvement but can safeguard against future issues) and then send in to get slabbed.
It has value for sure. Just looked thru the archives on GC and a corroded VG8 (far worse corrosion than yours) sold for 175 a few years ago.

I'd say EF details (severe environmental damage).

Sounds like I should consider submission on this one. Along with the 1807/8 split planchet before strike I posted in the variety and errors forum. Thanks all for your input.

How about submitting it to NGC or PCGS and ask for conservation?

This one is on its way to PCGS with the 1807/6 split planchet. Update when they get back to me.

Not a bad looking coin considering how it looked before, especially the reverse. Nice result!
