Can anyone tell me why my 1974 U.S quarter weighs 3.78 grams? I believe it is supposed to weigh 5.7 grams. It's a funny looking coin as well. And it has a slight ting sound when you drop it on the table. Discoloring on obverse side. The pictures look low quality but that's the way the quarter looks.

to the CCF.

This is PMD. The coin appears to have been exposed to an acid or some sort of caustic. Still worth 25 cents at this point.

No Doubt this coin was exposed to an acidic environment.

To CCF! I agree, PMD. Just a spender, if you can get someone to take it.

Agree with all above. I'd keep it as a fun curiosity.

Soaking in acid doesn't explain the weight though, does it?

Of course it does - acid dissolves the metal in the quarter making it lighter.

Your Quarter weighs less than normal, so acid does explain it, fully. It has eroded the metal away.
