A great deal. Purchased for a little less than gold value. 1882P Five Dollar Gold Liberty. There's a Retained Cud on the obverse in the 12 o'clock position. I apologize for the blurry closeup image. Also, there's a small, raised area just to the left of the date. Is this a Cud too? Thanks for the help.

Nice Cud for a gold coin. Don't know about the raised area by the date though, could have been from a die dent.

The R in TRUST looks wrong too. Was this caused by a damaged die? I'll get a better pic.

The R looks like an error too. I believe it is not PMD because the ribbon was unaffected. opinions? Thanks.

Personally, the fact that it was less than gold value would make me suspicious. I'm not saying it doesn't look real, but I'm no expert. Someone was awfully eager to sell it.

This is from a pawnshop and I have a receipt. He wasn't eager and he doesn't need the money. I know the owner. I sold him scrap gold for under spot. He'll make money. He gave me a great deal on the coin because I give him great deals when I sell him merchandise. He likes to reciprocate. I've been dealing with him since the 1990s.

The coin appears to be in a TPG holder.

Reveal the grade and firm - best show the full holder front and back.

I'm not necessarily suspicious of the coin - but simply wondering why it's provenance is being kept a mystery.

You guys must be a blast at parties.
The coin is in a cardboard flip. I took it out for the pictures. The provenance was it showed up at a pawnshop. I bought it. Mystery solved!

Just a thought but can the missing R be from grease filling the die? Looks like it (grease) may have affected some of the banner also.......

This does not appear to be a genuine example.

For real? I was just suspicious. You're saying it's fake though?
