I've noticed there are two or three different mint mark styles for this coin.
The one I pictured at the following link, http://goccf.com/t/472285, has a large mint mark. Then the pcgs website shows another with a small mint mark and then another that seems to have a medium-sized one. Are these different varieties?

Can you show any examples? I've never noticed if the S had different sizes. Could it be that it may have just been stamped in slightly different places on the die combined with die polishing to make it seem like different sizes?

Research needs to be done to find out if the mint actually used three different punches.
Might just be how the one punch was used or maybe even just wear on that one punch etc.

On the one that I imaged for the other thread, the top of the S touches the branch. There's another one where the top of the S doesn't touch the branch. That might just be a polishing issue. I did, however, find one with a smaller S, which is graded by NGC. The label doesn't attribute it, but it's clearly a different style mint mark.

So,are you mostly talking about "placement" of the MM?

The 1861 S Half Dollar had 5 different reverse dies that have been identified, 2 with medium size mintmarks and 3 with large size mintmarks with a total of 10 different die marriages identified to date. You can find all of the die marriages in Bill Bugert's Registry of Die marriage books found on the LSCC website,https://lsccweb.org/

Well, that's pretty interesting.
