This ought to be a good puzzle to figure out. It is brass, measures 24.3 mm and weighs 5.28 grams. Unlike the cash coins, the center hole is round instead if square.

Any ideas? Thanks in advance

Using Google lens, I agree with @docc, but note that new copies of this charm seem to be readily available online. The circulation "patina" may be purposeful.

Yep, its an "eight trigrams" protection charm. If you want a translation of the incantation on the reverse, this zeno.ru example gives it.

For info on the meaning and usage of the Eight Trigrams, see this Wikipedia page.

This will need to be at least silver to ward off any bad spirits, preferred gold if the evil entity is strong. LOL!

@sap, the 18th Century example on zeno has a square hole. Are you of the opinion that the OP's piece is modern or of similar age?
