Recently I found a bicentennial quarter without a clad layer on the edge. It also has no mintmark. I have included two photos of it. One photo is the obverse in between two other quarters. The other shows the edge of it. Dimensions and weight are within specs. Is this a fake or error of some kind? Thanks for your help!

Most likely just a normal clad that has been plated to hide edge copper.
I swing a metal detector and have a knack for finding dirty old coins.

@blue, first welcome to CCF. Second, yes these quarters were after-market plated in an effort to sell them for more than face value to watchers of late night television.

I see a genuine Bicentennial quarter that has been after market plated.

Thank you all very much! I'm generally a cynical person but even I was surprised to find out such dastardly scams exist!
