Your picture looks like the coin gold color on it? If so it could be plated.

That's a relatively normal toning color for the 80% silver, 20% copper cladding. It could still be plated, of course.

I would be curious to see images of the edge, specifically if any layers could be seen. The 90% silver coins from 1964 had a mass of 12.5g. So we might consider a transitional planchet as a possibility here.

Interesting find. Well outside the tolerance (11.1g to 11.9g). Not sure how much plating can add. A look at the edge is needed.

My gut feel is that you could not add enough plating mass to be that heavy without visibly distorting the devices.

I have to agree with your gut here.

I tried all sorts of searches for rolled thick Kennedy half dollars in NGC slabs. I feel like I have seen some, but all I found was quarters and dimes. Maybe I am using the wrong keywords in Google—over weight, thick, thin, planchet, rolled, and various combinations.

I considered blanks punched from the roll stock for the next denomination up (heavy) or down (light). Think of a quarter punched from half dollar stock (heavy) or dime stock (light).

Problem is, this example would be a half dollar from dollar stock—and the 40% silver Ike was still four years away.

It seems more likely this was minted on a 90% silver blank. It is well within tolerance (12.241g to 12.759g).

Assuming, of course, the scale was calibrated correctly.

Easy to weigh a few more half dollars to see any trends.

The point about scale calibration is an intelligent observation. Many a chemistry experiment has gone awry that way. =)
