Was needing opinions on this penny. It looks like it's 1989 S but can't really tell. Also this a die adjustment strike or split plachet? The coin weighs 2.1g and is same thickness around.

@eka, yes good question as the color is so unlike a "normal" cent. However, your coin has been mechanically damaged, perhaps as a so-called " Dryer Coin"--the copper plating has largely been worn off and the underlying zinc core is now visible.

A good acetone might take all that crud off but I don't think its worth the effort.. Obverse of the coin appears to have been sanded east-west. Notice the lack of a rim on the sides. The outer part of the reverse is worn down, most likely mechanically causing the lighter weight.

Agree, signs of deliberate damage (sanded down) or possibly dryer damage.
