Acetone/Verdi-Care Restoration Of 1858/7 Flying Eagle

Jimbo48 Valued Member United States 250 Posts	Posted 11/30/2024 1:53 pm I posted this coin earlier and ask for input on whether any type of restoration would be possible. Originally, I decided not to restore, but was persuaded by a friend to give it a go. I started with an acetone soak of 12 hours followed by a Verdi-care soak of 12 hours then a 2 hour soak in Acetone and a Verdi-Care coating for conservation. The Corrosion and Verdigris were removed. I am sort of on the fence as to whether this was a good move. I believe the coin is now preserved and no more corrosion will form. After Treatment Report this Post to the Staff

You made a trade off to lose the original surfaces - but with the huge benefit of also removing the ongoing corrosion mechanism. In my view you saved a numismatic treasure from eventual death. The original coin looks like it had an old cleaning when you look at the motley uneven colors. I don't believe that the original color was done naturally without some prior, old, cleaning.
