Rock, these drive me nuts sometimes, but when I can't find any supporting evidence elsewhere on the mint mark, I usually just call it a well placed die chip. Just an opinion.
I hear what you're saying MorgansRmine. I have a growing pile of such coins and call them unlisted rpm's thinking one day one of the attributors will get bored and start listing all these minor varieties, which I seriously doubt will happen, especially from 1952. There seems to be a ton of minor/small rpms for that year. But I do like the "die chip" concept. Thanks Rock
There are dozens of dies with that flaw in the mintmark, and a few that actually are RPMs that have the same break in the punch. One of them looks like it has four or five splits in the lower serif, because the damage itself looks like two splits in the lower serif.
1979-D Cents have the same problem on many dies. It appears that the lower serif is split, but a great number of dies show the exact thing, thus coming to the conclusion that it is a bad punch. 1972 & 1962 are other years with the same thing happening on many dies.
