Looks like toning of some sort. I do like the circulation cameo though!

Agree. I know these are acknowledged by some grading companies, but it's something I'm always suspicious about. to the CCF!

to the CCF, Coinhawk93! Quote: Does anybody know which years that PCGS acknowledges that a nickel is a black beauty variety? Only 1958 and 1959 as far as I know. They are labelled as "Improperly Annealed Planchet" - ANACS uses that and the term "BlackBeauty". If a coin is not in mint state, dark coloration is undoubtedly due to environmental damage. I don't think that the coloration would wear off of the high points if it were truly an improperly annealed planchet.
Inordinately fascinated by bits of metal with strange markings and figures

to the CCF You have what I called a 'Blackened Nickel' - all of which is due to environmental issues. It is alas not a collectable 'Black Beauty' which is due to improper alloy mixing, and occurred in limited numbers in 1958 and 1959. I had an entire collection of Blackened Jefferson. Your coin would have fit in well. Great fun to collect as a sidebar blackened Jefferson. You can read about them here from an older CCF thread, and gain some insights about your coin: http://goccf.com/t/248676

As folks have said, your coin had what we would call a circulation cameo. The tarnish, toning, or environmental damage has stained the coin a dark color. However, circulation wear and handling wear the high points back to silvery metal, creating a visually appealing contrast.

I wouldn't buy one of these even in a CAC holder.
