I bought my first Whitman Washington quarter album sometime in the mid-1970s. The title is "Collection Starting 1960 Number Three"; it holds all the coins from 1960 through 1979. For a long time after I completed this album (all from circulation except for the silver dates), I didn't pay attention to collecting quarters. Then my interest reawakened when the State Collection began in 1999. There were no coin stores where I was living so I couldn't get the Whitman folders for that collection. I lived close to a Barnes & Noble and they carried H. E. Harris & Co. folders, so that's what I've been using to collect the State Quarters as well as the other series up to the present. About 18 months ago, I was looking at my collection and noticed I didn't have a folder for Washington quarters 1980 through 1998. I did a bit of research and found that no such folder existed. I knew that Whitman sold a "blank" quarter folder, so I bought one from a nearby coin dealer (who hadn't been in business in my area back in 1999). So now, I had a new goal: fill up this folder with coins I found from circulation only. One thing I knew I needed to do to help this project along was stop using my debit card so much and pay for some purchases with cash in order to receive change. As time went on, the folder slowly began to fill up. Living on the East coast, finding Denver mint marks was more challenging than Philly. I even enlisted the help of a woman who works at the local Subway where I have lunch every day. I gave her a list of the coins I needed and she said she's check the change the customers give her every day. She actually found about six or seven dates for me! I kept an index card of what I had found and what I needed so I didn't have to open up the folder every time to look. As you can see, by and by I got down to one last coin: 1989-D. I let my Subway friend know and she said she'd keep a look out. Two days ago I went to the local library to make some copies and got a few quarters back in change. When I got home, I looked at what I had. The first quarter was a common Statehood Quarter. When I turned over the second quarter to reveal the date, I was a little shocked by what I saw: 1989-D. I thought, could it be? I got my index card to double check, and oh yes, it be! It was the final piece in the puzzle, as it were. At last, the folder was complete. And it only took about 18 months. To look for that amount of time for 38 specific dates, I thought it happened rather quick. And I didn't spend a single penny above face value. So here's to what could be called "modest coin collecting." If you don't have the funds to buy anything, you can still enjoy the thrill of the hunt as you fill in one hole at a time from circulation. The only downside is once you attain that goal, you need to find a new one. As far as quarters go, I still have plenty of holes to fill in the National Park and American Women collections. Onward!

Excellent work! Like you I am trying to complete a set of coins from circulation only. Being in Ohio D mint marks are hard to come by. My daughter went to Seattle on vacation so I asked her to get me $50 of mixed rolls coins. Not really from circulation but I'm not spending over face so I say it counts the same Anyway, about 85% of the coins she got were "D's and I filled in many holes, especially my ATB Quarters.
