This 1955-D nickel was an ebay freestyle pick for $3.99 (in a block of four nickels). I grappled with it for a while after lunch. Under some lighting angles, it sure does look like a 1955-D/S.The lower left pic shows that best. Under other lighting angles, it looks like a D mushed out by Die Deterioration. It's a further challenge because there are numerous D/S dies for 1955, unlike the single die OMM for 1949 and 1954. Also, all the catalog pictures were taken with good equipment, and I have no idea what light angle they used (presumably top-down microscope lighting?).

My holiday season kicks off with a family dinner in two hours. I might not get back to this coin for many days. Rather than let it just sit on my desk for a week, I thought I'd post it now. Anybody got any grand insights?

If it is a D over S then it'd be a nice one to have for that price.

I can't help because I'm so bad at RPM unless it is so obvious, but if it is, is a great pick up and the price was really good for it. Congrats

It looks good to me and I believe its WOMM-004 (VV OMM-004). Markers are there.

Yeah, I think you called it, Seeker. Interesting that the two catalogs list different markers. Definitely has the thick die scratches through the P of Pluribus. Also the short, thick scratch between NT of Monticello. Correct mintmark position. Neither catalog lists that visible gouge above the D, or the long thick scratch through MER of America.

I found a comparable MS66 1955-S/D on PCGS (26763050).

Earlier this year, I cherry-picked a 1955-D slab. As it so happens, that was also OMM-004. What are the odds? =)

Thanks for the help!
