An odd piece that arrived here in a box lot...centers are softly struck & rims wide...diameter standard...in hand, it grades AU (better than the scanned image suggests)...anyhow, not aware of how it came to be...your input most appreciated.

This does not appear to be an AU coin - the rims are well worn down as well as many high spots as well. It could be a slight Grease Filled Die on the reverse

Possibly a former Encased Cent.

Could be a former Encased Cent as Tanman stated. Also, your coin is not AU. I'm thinking VF for the grade.

Leaning heavy towards Encased Cent...notice rim below Abes bust...looks like a Rim Fin on the INNER part of rim.
