Is there any possible reason that the S mm would be stamped over the number 5 in the date?

That's just damage to the 5.

Just a circulation hit and Pareidolia. There's only one OMM listed, but it's only for 1952 D, not 1952 S. http://doubleddie.com/921576.html

I thought it was PMD as well at first. Is it possible for an S mm to be stamped over the date during the minting process though?

Yes, it's possible. The mint employee would have to accidentally punch the mint mark into the date on to the die by hand during punching. Mint marks used to be punched in by hand until 1990. Although, yours is just PMD.

It's certainly possible and not being documented already doesn't mean it's not legit. I think it's pretty interesting and may be worth further investigation.

All I'm seeing is damage from circulation usage.

To me, I really studied that 5 for a long time did not see anything other than several hit marks on it. You can see the flow of metal on each hit making it only to look like something else.

Might be a die chip involved here.

I'm thinking maybe a combination of damage and a small chip.
