The Henning nickels are well known, and even the subject of Joe Cronin's new book "The Henning Nickel Collector's Guide." Not trying to plug the book, but Joe's books tend to be worth having. The arrival of the book is just a coincidence, as I have always glanced at nickels for Hennings. And, last week, found this 1939 in a 2x2 slip among a couple hundred other nondescript circulated nickels that someone, for reasons unknown, decided to put in slips. It's a rare date for these counterfeits, and carries a heavy premium. I know ICG will slab them as counterfeit Henning nickels, but am wondering if any of the other TPGs will do it. I'll send Joe a note and ask, as if anyone knows that answer he does. Without going into the myriad of details about these, the diagnostics for this particular coin are: "looped R" (that funky-looking left leg of the R in PLURIBUS), Die crack from rim, between the US of PLURIBUS to the dome on the reverse, and a weight of 5.27g. 1939 Jefferson nickel counterfeit - "Henning" nickel

Very interesting fake nickel. I hadn't even realized that there was a 1939 version of a Henning. Guess I should be checking all 1939 nickels for that broken R?
Do you think the original owner was suspicious when they put it into a 2x2?

No, I don't think the previous owner had a clue. There are something like 200 circulated nickels in 2x2 slips in this collection and pretty much all are circulated common dates. None were labeled with any varieties or any notes at all, just the date, and in this case, G for GOOD condition. No clue why anyone would slip all those low value nickels. But I see the same with Lincolns all the time, just vast sets of cents in poor condition put in 2x2s. Go figure.

Fantastic find. I've searched through over 390,000 nickels and have yet to find one of any date. Quote: but am wondering if any of the other TPGs will do it. I'll send Joe a note and ask, as if anyone knows that answer he does. I would be interested in what you learn, just to satisfy the curiosity as I don't have any to get certified.
