I've been getting interested in these lately. I have the Fuld "U.S. Civil War Store Cards" and the "Patriotic Civil War Tokens" books by George and Melvin Fuld as well as the Rulau reference for HTT. Sometimes I can look at past auctions on the Heritage site to get a rough idea about what current prices might be for nice examples, but living in Europe I seldom see much material in the XF/AU grades which interest me more than BU for these.

I have seen rough estimates of between $20 and a little less than $100 for more common tokens depending on grade, but what would be the grade for the lower end of the spectrum? I find some XF or good VF tokens over here, but they are usually IMHO overpriced.

Is there an online pricing guide at the PCGS or NGC sites, or some other site?

Thanks!

to the CCF !!

Over 20 years ago now, Kanzinger published a price guide. There's been no update since; this, as Kanzinger died. Given that there are so many CWT varieties, over 10k, and other variables, this was a tremendous undertaking.

Steve Hayden is the top dealer in CWT's and other early exonumia. That said, his auctions bring top dollar, as he draws top end buyers with deep pockets. Heritage and Stack's archives are good resources to consult for comp valuations. Of course, one can always track item sales on ebay. Also, Richard's Token Database lists many CWT's and is a fine resource.

I highly recommend joining the Civil War Token Society. Their quarterly journal has much to offer collectors .... periodic auctions, informative articles, classified ads, dealer ads and more.

In the meantime, I have noticed that the two Fuld books I mentioned above also contain important information about pricing in there as well as about the different varieties, etc.

The actual prices will not be exactly up-to-date, of course, but the principles involved are very well explained.
