Just found this 86 LMC this afternoon roll searching. Is this a valid error or did someone mess with this cent? In looking closer, the 'AMERICA" going across the Obverse is a Close AM- so how can that be on a 1986 cent when the Close AM was not out till 1993, unless the America is not from a cent but from a different denomination? There is also something going on by the Rim near Liberty and above Lincoln's head on the Obverse. The Reverse also has extra columns and it looks like the letters ON from ONE Cent? Opinions welcomed if this is real or not. I don't thing this is valid as the penny is also not level- its bent like someone put it into a vise and applied pressure to input the other coin/coins on it and in so doing bent it. If not real,it will be a good educational and conversational piece at least. Edited by chuckster 125 05/17/2009 7:45 pm

looks like a vise job to me. I bet it got your attention when you first saw it though.

It looks as though the extra lettering is not raised. I would venture to guess it may have been slammed with a quarter into the obverse and a cent in to the reverse. Just my opinion/guess. I am no expert. Nice Pics.

bmanofnbc: This was the initial reaction ! Then I turned it over and saw the reverse and it was a another ! Regardless of whether its real or not- its a very strange looking penny and will make for a nice conversational/educational coin.

It's an obvious vise job -- squeezed between two coins.

If the subject coin is bent there may have been a hammer involved.

When the lettering is mirrored/backwards and there is a rim line from another coin it is definitely tampered with or struck through another coin. (Brockage)

I have a 40 ton hydraulic press (for car repairs), and I'm sure that, by stacking Three Cents and giving about 10 tons or less, I could make one (the middle of the stack) very much like that. In fact, if I can ever afford to lose the Three Cents -- times are tough -- I may try it.

It's a cent squeezed between a quarter and another cent. Definitely not an error, and not difficult to replicate.
