Has anyone ever watched a movie where coin collecting/history was mentioned in the plot?
I have seen movies mentioning art, treasure hunt, yet not a movie that touches on the hobby.

Quote: "The Numismatist" in 1992 staring Robert Redford and Gina Stewart
David Carlson (Redford) was a struggling coin shop owner with a sinister past. Dive deep into the essence of this thrilling drama about greed, death, and the ones we love

Hey I couldn't think of any so I figured I'd make one up. Couldn't ya see Redford as a simple lawyer by day and coin jockey by night?

No, but I've seen plenty of flicks where coins are seen. Tombstone with Val Kilmer and Kurt Russel showed some Morgans in the Oriental Saloon :-)

I recall a CSI-Miami show where one of the investigators went into a pawn shop and wanted to trade a 1909 S VDB for a 1916 D dime. I can't remember the exact plot line of the show but I believe a collection had been stolen.

American Buffalo (1996) starring Dustin Hoffman, Dennis Franz and Sean Nelson(based on the stage play by David Mamet) From the DVD back cover: "For down-and-out junk dealer Don (Franz), life goes from lucky to unbearable when he discovers that the rare Buffalo nickel he just sold for $90 is worth ten times as much! Refusing to let himself be out-swindled, Don enlists the help of young protege Bobby (Nelson) in a scheme to steal the coin back. But their Plans are suddenly alerted by the intrusion of Teach (Hoffman) a disturbingly aggressive would-be thief who badgers Don into cutting him in on the heist - a decision that carries explosive consequences for everyone involved.Don has a RedBook (which is how he found out the coin's true value), and the BU Buffalo nickel in shown in a close-up shot, held in Bobby's hand. This is a movie where coin collecting is essential to the plot, no doubt about it!

So clearly there is a void in hollywood with respect to our hobby - Art, history, Artifacts have been broadly covered - Da Vinci Code, Indiana Jones etc.
Why is the coin collecting hobby not in the movie spotlight in spite of many collectors and years of movie making?

IMO, in today's world with all the action, violence, sexuality, and, the Nintendo generation, there is not enough interest in Numismatic related topics Now, a movie about all 5 1913 Liberty nickels disappearing might get some attention

I think you are on to something, Dave! I could see a movie about the the stolen 1933 Saint-Gaudens Gold Double Eagle which ended up with Kink Farouk of Egypt - covering history along with the coins travel back to the US.

Now that would be cool! History and Numismatics go hand in hand.

That's great Mr Finger but, why couldn't the big cent toward the end, be a 1909-S V.D.B!
