While checking this 1998 cent for Wide AM, I was shocked at the crispness of the details in the reverse side. All the grooves on the columns and decorative additions on the Memorial are unusually sharp for a 30 year old coin.

Unaware they are normal, but seeing the "ghost columns", I searched for column DDRs leading me to Wexlers lists. There are over 200 1998 DDR examples with a large chip (like mine) on column 6 or 7, at either side of the Lincoln statue.

Doubled dies on lettering is pretty clear, but why would this chip on a column become classified as a doubled die?

Thank you, E and R. It looks like all the others on Wexler.

Thank you, Oddguy I appreciate your comment.

I still feel that if this lump was anywhere but on the column it would just be called a chip.

Nice find, looks like a match for WDDR-005.

The column chip does look identical. I have some small die chips around the CENT lettering that may not be apparent in the reverse photo. So I did not recognize it as that. Thank you CoinHI for taking the time to investigate.

Old Codger NJ, what you have here as all above said is DDR. That's not Die Chip. Die Chip are different.
