I'm going to be the skeptic here - just for the sake of the debate.

What if this is not a Cud, but material that was added to the coin soon after it was minted, then worn down over 100+ years of use?

I ask this because a true Cud of that size would require a significant volume of planchet material to be diverted from the opposing obverse side to fill the broken die.

However - we can all clearly see the full rim and LIBERTY opposite of the Cud location.

Leads me to a conclusion that the ' Cud' was not produced by a broken die but by material added to the coin.

What do you think of this view?

nickelsearcher; Your debate has merit and welcomed, however I do see a lighter Lib from Liberty. Maybe not light enough, I just do not know.

nickelsearcher , the only way to respond to your skepticism is showing you the weight of the coin in discussion , I would think it a piece of metal that big would add some weight on it , but unless my scale's wrong , it shows it's 3.1 . I though about it when the guy from Waco had a price of $3 dollars on the 2x2 .

It's listed in "THE Cud BOOK by Sam Thurman and Arnold Margolis" as LC-17S-8RB.
