Hi:

I have an 1871 Shield nickel (picture posted here in the grading forum) and I noticed that prices for this year are a little higher than other years. What is the reason for that? I am assuming fewer were minted that year. Does anyone know why?

Yes 1871 is showing only 561,000 minted but it was 6 million + the year before, and 4 million plus the year after. So the scarcity is likely a big part of it.

The 561,000 mintage figure plays a part as compared to others. It would be a more desirable coin. By the way, I agree with VF25.
