First, I must explain that I have posted the following images on another forum of this site. But I think my question might be better asked here. I am sorry for any duplication. That said, would you please tell me if you would consider grading a coin based strongly on a unique/funny error? In this case a hornet's nest layered Die Chip, placed precisely at the end of Roosevelt's horse's nose. The coin itself is in decent shape perhaps an MS 62 or 63. Thanks   |

While perhaps unique/funny, I don't think that there is enough numismatic premium associated with it to justify certification.
Inordinately fascinated by bits of metal with strange markings and figures

It's a nice Die Chip, but it's not worth getting it slabbed. Save your time and money. Die Chips generally don't carry a premium, unless they're huge. Getting coins graded by a TPG is very expensive, so most of the time it's not even worth it. Errers and Varietys.

Thanks... I appreciate your sound reply. With so many new collectors searching for error coins, it's good to know what to pursue and what not. Error collectors are a separate breed of new collectors, who seek a variety of mint mistakes, which are more than just double dies.. You find them all over ebay, but it is nice when you find something a little different. "Collectable but not Gradable" |

@A1a, I agree with the above, but wanted to quibble over one part of your description. Unless the die chip formed immediately before this coin was struck and then it was replaced following this one coin, your coin is not unique. Much more likely is that there are hundreds or even thousands of them out there and you just happened to have found this one. In part, that is why there is not really any numismatic value to this die chip and mint errors which only occur a handful of times are worth more.

And note the E2830 coin designation - PCGS coin# 2830 with a mint error.
