Looks like rust on it - some random kind of steel token
Is it the same thickness as a nickel?

It looks like an arcade token. It's certainly not a coin.

I believe the symbol on both sides is an ornate letter S with an arrow going diagonally through it.

The swirly background pattern is very commonly seen on transit tokens and other tokens from the late 1800s and early 1900s.

Did a little digging this morning, and found it. It is considered a Love Token S with an Arrow through it. Google says it might be from the Victoria Era from 1837-1901. Thank you all for input made it easier to look up. If anyone has any more details please share.

OK interesting--thx for following up with us.

@hon, are there many nickel-sized arcade tokens? I'm mostly familiar with quarter-sized ones, but am not super-familiar with this field. Thx.
