Now for something completely different (and weird!)

During calendar year 2024 I saved all change received in cash transactions and set them aside in my change jar. I finally got around to counting out the 2024 totals. I live in the suburban Phoenix area and travelled only to western Colorado, Miami FL and Myrtle Beach SC for short trips during the year. At least 90% of the change received was in the Phoenix area.

I did not keep track of paper money received back in change.

These days, like most people, debit or credit cards are used for a majority of transactions. As a general rule anything I purchase under about $15 is done in cash and anything above that is done via debit or credit card.

During the year I got 696 coins back for a grand total of $74.66. Here is the breakdown:

Coin Nr. Value
Pennies 281 $2.81
Nickels 71 $3.55
Dimes 118 $11.80
Quarters 226 $56.50

Grand Total 696 $74.66
Average value per coin received: 10.73 cents

I then broke down the years and mint marks of the almost 700 coins received. The year with the most coins was 2022 with 49 coins, and the least since 2000 was 2009 with 2. The oldest coin found was a pair of 1961 pennies, both a Denver and a Philly.

Mint marks were overwhelmingly from Denver. We rarely see Philadelphia coins here. There were 4 coins from San Franscico (all pennies from 1969 thru 1974), 139 coins from Philadelphia and 553 from Denver.

As for ATB and other special series quarters; the most were the 2023 Ka'Ike coins, 5 from Denver and 2 from Philly. The most quarters of any year/mint combination was the 2021 Delaware Crossing variety with 6 from Denver.

With Dimes the only combination in double digits was the 2006 Denver issue with 10. 2023D had 9 and along with a single 2023P made the only other year when 10 were found.

Nickels were the least seen coin, only 71 all told, including 2 Canadians. The most for a single year was 8 for 1999, with 3 Denvers and 5 Phillies. The largest of a single combination was 6 2023D's.

Pennies were of course the largest number in aggregate, with 281, 4 from San Francisco, 42 from Philly and 235 from Denver. The year with the most was 2022, with 29; all Denver except for 1 Philly. Several years had double digits; 2024, 2023, 2022, 2021 and 2000.

I did not receive any half-dollar or dollar coins in change thruout the year.

I have the complete breakdown but it appears I cannot upload a sharing link to this forum. I have it in a PDF which is 6 pages but if I copy and paste it here as text the formatting would be lost. If there is a way to share the PDF or Word Document please let me know!

I'm surprised there were no nickels or pennies older than 1961, among nearly 700 coins.

I was too! I usually find a Wheatie or older Jeff now and then. The only really saver of the whole year was a 64 silver dime. It went with the couple others I found in a CoinStar in my Save tray,

A couple of the ATB Quarters looked toned like they were a collection dump but they were too banged up to consider keeping.

I posted the full report as text with separate replies for each value and the year by year summary following. Enjoy!

These are the coins I received in change from the Phoenix area from January 1, 2024 thru December 31, 2024. Excluded are any coins found in CoinStar's, all these coins were received in change. No halves or dollar coins were received in change.

Ummm... you wouldn't know anyone with about $75 I could borrow until next Tuesday, would you?

Just kidding of course.

That's an interesting bit of information. I never thought of keeping track of my incoming change like this. Nice idea.

ANA ID: 3203813 - CONECA ID: N-5637 Clean a coin that may be worth collecting? Please DON'T! When in doubt, leave it dirty!!

Not a clue! I didn't even think of that until you mentioned it! When I was actively roll searching I stopped saving 64-D nickels except if they were of exceptional condition, I threw back any that were not. I limited myself to 200 of them and just kept the best of the best.

Everything is about what I'd expect. There are a few more of the old quarters and fewer of the copper cents bit otherwise things seem pretty random.

It's interesting to note that even though mintages of zincolns and high attrition for all one cent coins should assure that the older coppers are pretty much gone they are still commonplace. This is because the zinc coins keep going bad and the copper pennies keep circulating. It's the reverse of Gresham's Law. Curiously, the incidence of wheaties in circulation stubbornly has stayed around 1% around here. Since the zinc cents keep disappearing even the oldest cents which get removed and respent can hold their own.

Until the last several years I used to see a lot of '65 to '75 cents in AU or nice high grade. I sure don't see many any longer. These tend to be spotted, damaged, and worn just like most of the other older coins in circulation. You can still find a nice bicentennial quarter though.

Perhaps with the discontinuance of the penny the attrition rates will drop slightly on other denominations, especially nickels and dimes. Someone who pulls a few disgusting pennies out of his pocket at the end of the day is likelier to toss them in the trash if there are no quarters in with them.
Time don't fly, it bounds and leaps.
