A doubled die has it devices hub doubled while the die was being made. Machine doubled I caused by machine movement of the dies called Machine Doubling. The die is normal. The coin is distorted by movement of the die. With the same run the Machine Doubling will be different as to how the die is loose on the machine. Notice this example: Note the die scratches through the date? Each coin was struck with the same die to varying degrees of movement. The digit is not doubled just distorted. Machine Doubling always look like a flat shelf near the devices sometimes even on the bust or Memorial/Wheat ears can be doubled. Thus they are common and not a variety. Just a damaged coin in my opinion. Note on a doubled die. The devices are wider/taller and no shelf mark on them.
