Are you sure it's raised and not incuse? It looks like it may be incuse by looking at the shadows.

Try angling the camera.
To me, it looks incuse. Could it possibly be a radically misaligned die clash? It's about the size of stars on the reverse. I would look for other evidence of a clash. For example, examine that bit between ER.

That's really neat! You will need to decide if it is incuse or not incuse. You have the coin in hand, photos can be deceiving. There are no other signs of any kind of clash remnants on your coin so...

clashes are usually found on the field of a coin not on the raised design elements (which are incuse on the die) So, if that ws a clash, I would expect to see mor of the clash on the fields. That star on the face appears to be from one of the inner stars from the reverse. could this be a dropped 'letter' (in this case a star)?

Very interesting find. Is it raised or incuse?

By the shadows, it really looks like the star in incuse. I wonder if we're looking at a Dropped 'Letter' type of error, but this time it's a star. I think it's a bit far out of alignment for this to be a clash.
Just my guess.

Could it have been pressed hard against a star from another half dollar reverse somehow?
It doesn't really look like metal has moved, though.

Great error! Dearborn said... Quote: I agree - just as I stated in my post above.. Umm, yeah! I was just agreeing with YOU! Yeah, that's it! I have no idea of how I missed your reply, but it's one of those 'Great Minds' situations. In this case one of the minds is just a little damaged and didn't read all of the replies thoroughly. I even took the time to do an overlay to see how far out of alignment the dies would have to be to even get near leaving a clash like this. It would be way, way out. I really should have just agreed with you. I hope you can forgive my oversight, and I didn't step on your toes too hard!

The first pic below is of a different half dollar that's been hit with something, see how the surrounding edges appear. Here are two zoomed in images of the star.
