@jhk, first welcome to CCF. Second, it appears as though someone has soldered or brazed a small metal disc to this dime. Can you please add a picture of the obverse of the coin to this thread? Thx.

Not a defect or an error. That was added after the dime left the mint.
There is no way for that to happen when the coin was struck.
Perhaps someone was making jewellery with it.

I think the defect lies within the person that damaged a perfectly good dime.
This could very well be, someone trying to create a dime with a nail fixed to it (nail tip is now broken off).
People used to nail a dime like this to the board walk at the beach..and laughs that would follow.

What is the date on this coin? I'll add it to the title for you. (we like to has as much info in the title so it is easier to search for later on).

anyway, I think it could have been a makeshift lapel pin.
