Hello all! Longtime readers of this sub-forum may recall my occasional posts asking for thoughts about circulated commemorative half dollars, as I try and assemble a set like Not Mint to Be, Worn Out, and Nickelsearcher. I haven't posted in a while, not because I've stopped working on this set, but because I haven't found a coin that I liked since the summer of '24. Today, though, I spotted this circulated Gettysburg, which is the one that I've wanted circulated above all others, ever since I saw Nickelsearcher's example. Here is the obverse:  And here is the reverse:  I strongly suspect that this is what it looks like, an honestly circulated Gettysburg with unaltered (no cleaning!) surfaces! What say you all? This is quite literally the first problem-free Gettysburg that I've seen in four years, so I'm keen to get your thoughts before I try to purchase it (as the asked price is hefty, as it ought to be.) |

Pursuit of an honestly circulated (i.e. problem free) classic commemorative type set requires patience and perseverance. Many of these coins just don't come to the market often, or even at all. But - here you have found one! Congratulations.  I agree with genuine and original surfaces. If I were still looking for one I would purchase it. I'm going to put up a photo of my PCGS VG10 so we can compare relative grades:  To help on pricing, I paid $366 for this coin (raw) in 2012. edit - I say your obverse has more wear, while my reverse has more wear. Overall I suggest they both net the same and PCGS did call mine VG10. Let us know what you decide to do. Edited by nickelsearcher

Congrats! Do you send your coins in to a third-party service (e.g., PCGS) for encapsulation and grading? Collecting history one coin or medal at a time! (c) commems. All rights reserved.

Congrats on the auction win!  Looks like a great, wholesome coin! I would guess it grades Fine, but this is outside my area of expertise. |

Very rarely. Even though some grading fees are reasonable, I always think that I'd rather save for another coin purchase than having one graded. However, I might consider it for the scarcer circulated coins in my set: this one, Antietam, and Maryland. If I could afford to easily have all of my circ commems slabbed I would, so I could start a lowball registry set. Or, if I came across one certain to be a /0 lowball I'd consider that too. Quote:
