Hello everyone,

Haven't handled one of these before; weight and diameter are right.

I know many of this date were sea salvaged; anyone that knows more about these know if the wear on the obverse suggests that?

I bought it with some bullion silver at prices I normally pay so I'm not concerned about value, just curious about the coin.

R.

@roma, any chance you can add a picture of the edge in the general area of that grind mark at the top on your first pic? Thx.

@spence, that area concerned me too but close up and under a loupe it's silver color; unfortunate browning makes it look otherwise.

Ok yep I was more wondering why someone would have abraded the coin at that spot (e.g. to remove a pendant mount).

I know you say that it is the right weight and diameter, but I'd recommend getting the specific gravity too so that you at least know if it is a silver alloy. I'm a little suspicious of that black patina around some of the letters. Hopefully others will weigh in too with their thoughts.

The rim looks funny on the reverse - like a Rim Fin or something. But it's less worn than the rest of the coin.
Inordinately fascinated by bits of metal with strange markings and figures
