I have no doubt that members of this forum have seen this kind of thing many times before. But I am new to the hobby and would love to hear what people think happened to this penny that I found in a 2 x 2 envelope that said "REDUCED CENT" on it. That's all.

Great example of a Dryer Coin.
It must have been spinning around in there for quite awhile to be that worn down.
No value though, it is a novelty coin.

That's called a Dryer Coin.

Not technically a Dryer Coin as the edges would be worn smooth and the faces of the coin would show significant degradation. Also, the coin looks slightly out of round.

I've heard Mike Diamond describes these kinds of coins as having been "reduced on the horizontal plane", which I take to mean some type of mechanical action has been applied to the coin, such as with a pipe reduction tool, for example.

The net result to the coin is essentially the same as what you see on a Dryer Coin, though, so perhaps a distinction without that much of a difference.

I'm usually quick to call ' Dryer Coin', however, I'm thinking a spooned coin in this case.

Keep 'em coming: I now know what a Dryer Coin is AND a spooned one. The edges had me thinking, too, after reading through the link posted above.

No matter what you want to call it, it is still damage
no matter how it happened.

This one may be spooned rather than a dryer victim.
