Thought this was cool, here's a 'type set' of 1839 cents, I found 2 of them just picking through my sack of random large cents, grabbed the other 2 cheaply on ebay, 20-30 bucks.

What a crazy year in the cent world, they started with the Head of 1838, then the Silly, the Booby, and the Head of 1840/Petite Head, all in one year. And there is a 5th type, a rare "1839/6" overdate that is a lot harder to get, I'll skip that for now, just thought it was cool to see this much variety in a single year.

I wish I was educated on the different varieties. As soon as I started my book set, I knew I was in over my head. I have approximately 500 loose large cents, with my variety coins in individual ziplocks.

The 1839/6 is a frustrating variety. By absolute rarity it is only an R-3 a not so common variety, but since it is well known and a RedBook variety it is popular and most all the unattributed pieces have been snapped up. So the coin is considerably more expensive than the typical R-3
