I am stumped on this one. I believe it's a 1974 Washington quarter but it looks like a 1928 Mercury dime stamped on it. I don't want to clean obviously until I know what it is. Any help would be great.

Looks like a beat up quarter to me. Where do you see a Mercury dime image?

A full, large and sharp pic of the reverse would be most welcome. Thanks.

Just how during the striking of the quarter do you think that a 28 Mercury dime would get stamped on it . That is impossible. What you see is Paradolia.

Please use a memory card or cable with your scope. Screen pictures are cruddy and not allowed for a reason.
Inordinately fascinated by bits of metal with strange markings and figures

to CCF Error-Eric This coin looks to be very beat up and maybe in a fire. However, Do Not post up screen shots of your scope, use a computer or a memory card to get the actual image and post that.

This is just a normal quarter that has been heavily damaged. Nothing more.

No matter how you turn or adjust your coin, there is a beat up quarter, nothing else. Sorry.

@Error-Eric - - Perhaps a good, long soak in acetone.

Will acetone eat the silver?

No. As long as you soak it in pure acetone from the hardware or car parts store, the coin will not be damaged unless you rub it or wipe it. Don't use nail polish remover.
