I'm more of a coin collector, so not really familiar with the currency world. However, I'm really drawn to high denomination notes. I would like to get a $1,000 bill someday, but have a decent $500 bill in my collection. It is PMG certified VF-25. What range do these retail at? It is common 34A New York District. thanks, John Edited by johnny54321 05/25/2009 12:24 am

A note very similar to yours closed on ebay today for $804. My nephew also has one like yours that's "slabbed". I think he gave around $900 for it a couple years ago.

Nice! I remember 30 years ago when I was in high school and working in a supermarket a customer tried to pay his bill with one of those! My manager wouldn't accept it! Even back then they were scarcely seen in circulation. (only time I've seen one in circulation)

I'd probably have better luck if I kept it in the "slab", as the reverse of these make it look like play money. Of course I'm only kidding, but it's an amusing thought. I think the collector demand on these have gone down a bit, as I only paid $705 for my example. One really good thing about purchasing high denoms as collector item is that even if the market completely tanks, it will still be worth $500. What other expensive collectible can you buy where you receive 75% of the purchase cost back in CASH!?!? (btw, I tried to use this logic to justify my purchase to my wife....all to no avail. It was worth a shot though )

I would be worried about a counterfeit and probably would not accept one of those unless it was from a bank.

Very nice note. I have always wanted a large denomination note and thought they were impossible to find until I looked on ebay. My grandfather was a builder and my father said when he was a kid in the 40's my grandfather would often come home with 500 and 1000 dollar bills in his wallet after a home sale. It is hard to believe that these and silver coins used to actually circulate. Ahhh... the good ole days.

Is the federal reserve trying to take these notes out of circulation? Like if they received one, would they destroy it? Also, dont you think it would be a good idea to get rid of the $1 and start making these higher denominations? Just some thoughts...

From what I understand, the banks are all under orders to return to the Fed anything higher than a C-note, so they can be retired. The idea is to make it tougher for drug dealers to deal in cash.
Our thousand dollar bill was withdrawn for the same reason.

You could walk into Walmart and blow A $500.00 bill in a minute! Drug dealers are going to deal even if they eliminate the $100.00...They'll just need a bigger bag to move the money with! Bring back the bigger denominations!

I worked in a large bank for years and the only time the $1000 notes were used was mainly for novelty (e.g. a wealthy customer decidine he'd like one to show off to his friends). They were pointless really.

Yes, and occasionally, they were given out as contest prizes, too.
